Won-a-days! - Apr 8, 2006

I watched throughout the day as my partner worked with my son on a school project. The project had very few parameters only that he had to build a space transport vehicle of some sort that would carry a heavy load representing gravity. The vehicle is driven by an egg which has to be sheltered to stop the gravity from squishing it. My son had decided that he would build it using wood, wheels, power tools and nails. In the process I watched as he learned to use a drill, a jig saw, and found out how to get "more power" from a little remote car that is built into the project.

It was so nice to see them working together and to see skills being passed down from father to son as they worked outside on this beautiful spring day. Whether or not the vehicle will work is another question, but I don't think it matters. There was a lot of discussion and imagination at work. The egg will be safe and the vehicle will stand up to the load. More importantly the lessons learned and the time with Dad are much farther reaching than a lesson on gravity.
