Dragonflies - Jan 26, 2006

We got a new futon and a coffee table set today ... we bought it ourselves. Not extraordinary for most people I guess, but when you've had only hand-me-down furniture in your living room for 14 years, it's nice to be able to pick something you want. Made my day!

The weather today has gone from a clear rather pleasant morning to a blustery raining afternoon. Despite the gloom I am feeling great as we once again participated in a workshop - this time on leadership - bringing our staff ever closer. As I look up at the eagle on my calendar the quote echos the feeling of the day -
"Dare to Soar - your attitude almost always determines your altitude in life".

Dragonfly...how interesting in relation to everyday wonders. Did you know there are more than 5,000 species of dragonflies there are only 4,000 know species of mammals?

The modern families of dragonflies appeared, about 250 million years ago, but their ancestors, the giant Protodonata, were alive 300 million years ago and had wingspans of up to one metre, (Dinosaurs are dated back 227 million years ago).

They are one of the fastest and largest insects. It is estimated that the top speed for a dragonfly is between 30 and 60 km/h (19 to 38 mp/h) yet their wings only beat about 30 times per second. The wings beat and twist independently of each other in a figure eight motion, which makes dragonflies very acrobatic.

...So the next time you see a dragon fly you could call it the wonder of the day or won-a-day for short.

It's raining yet again. But, yesterday there was a beautiful double rainbow in the sky right outside our office window! It gave us hope that the sun will shine again!

The year of the dog begins on the new moon of January 29th 2006.
Got me thinking about my big, black beautiful dog and his qualities, spontaneous, loyal, sense of play and oh so loving. Yeah, he is a great companion!

Yesterday was my good day for the week so far, I'll see if tomorrow can top it.
